This is definitely a different type of Tarantino movie, not different in the sense that it isn’t something he’s done before, but different in the sense that it basically is just a fun character driven movie. It is a Tarantino movie. It is almost as if Quentin Tarantino directed a homage to himself, in the form of a spaghetti western. Nominated for 5 Oscars, and I believe that it deserves the nominations, probably not the wins, but definitely the nominations. I’m so happy that I have gotten to see all of the Best Picture category movies except for two: Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild (which I might add is near the top of my Netflix queue. This is definitely going to be a good year at the Oscars. But anyways, Django Unchained. Before this we had the glorious Inglourious Basterds, about Nazi-killing Jews, and that I thought was kind of like this in the sense that it was just a fun movie. Complex, sure, but definitely fun. It wasn’t like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, or any of that. I liked both Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, in the sense that they are just entertaining Tarantino movies.
Django, played by Jamie Foxx, is a slave. Simply put. In quite the engaging opening, Dr. King Schultz, played by the charismatic Christoph Waltz, buys Django from slavery and makes him a free man. Schultz has more intentions than just freeing him, though. He wants to make Django his own personal deputy bounty hunter, for Schultz himself, who claims to be a dentist, is a bounty hunter. Whilst being trained to be a bounty hunter, it is revealed that Django and his wife have been separated since he became a slave. Django and Schultz try to find his wife, who they find out is acting as a slave at a plantation owned by Calvin Candie. His giant cotton plantation is cleverly titled “Candieland.” They have the basic intentions of buying Django’s wife, Calvin’s slave, off of his hands. Seems easy enough, right? Oh no, that’s why it is a Tarantino film! Calvin Candie, played by the lady-adored Leonardo Dicaprio, is a ruthless and quite crazy man, who is also quite the negotiator.
I loved Django Unchained, but it certainly isn’t Tarantino’s best, but it still is a wonderful movie. It has every aspect that you would want in a Tarantino movie. It has the witty dialogue, it has the excessive language, it has great (and I mean great) acting, it has excessive violence, it has excessive and almost unbelievable blood, it has unbelievable scenarios, it has a good plot, it has a really good score, it has good music choice, it has everything. Tarantino really has outdone himself again. The actors are quite amazing in their roles, especially Christoph Waltz and Leonardo Dicaprio. Christoph Waltz plays the bounty hunter with charisma, and Leonardo Dicaprio plays Calvin Candie with ruthless charisma. I’m a bit disappointed that Leonardo didn’t get nominated for another Oscar with this, I don’t think he deserves to win, but I think he should’ve been nominated. I think Christoph Waltz has a good chance at winning this year, mainly because I’ve forgotten the other nominees, but he did a really good job. Jamie Foxx also, in the title role, delivers as the slave-turned-bounty hunter Django. I couldn’t picture another actor in his place.
Overall, lovers of Tarantino won’t be disappointed. It is a really bloody good time of a movie. I’m not sure if this movie will win any Oscars, but it definitely deserves the nominations it got. Go see it, it is really good, and I’ll probably get it once it comes out on DVD.
